Somewhere along the way, we were taught that photos need to look a certain way to be worth keeping.
Everyone smiling.
Hair in place.
Kids looking at the camera.
Nothing out of frame.
And when real life doesn’t cooperate — because it never does — it can feel like the photos failed.
But here’s the truth I wish more people knew:
The photos you’ll treasure most are rarely the perfect ones.
They’re the ones that feel like something.
Years from now, you won’t remember whether your toddler had dirt on their knees or if your dress wrinkled when you sat down. You won’t care that someone blinked or that the wind messed up your hair.
What you will remember is how it felt when your child grabbed your hand without thinking.
How your partner looked at you when you laughed.
How small your baby felt curled into your chest.
Those moments don’t happen on cue. They happen in between — and they don’t need fixing.
Your life isn’t styled. It’s lived.
It’s loud sometimes. Messy sometimes. Tender in ways that are easy to miss unless someone is paying attention.
When I photograph families, couples, or new parents, I’m not looking for perfection. I’m watching for connection:
Those moments are honest. And honesty lasts.
Perfect photos can look beautiful — but they don’t always hold meaning.
Meaning comes from recognition. From seeing yourself and thinking, That was us.
When photos are too posed or too polished, they can start to feel distant. Like a version of your life that never quite existed.
But imperfect photos?
They grow with you.
They remind you who you were in that season — not who you thought you were supposed to be.
One of the biggest fears I hear is, “I’m awkward in photos.”
Most people are — until they realize they don’t need to perform.
You don’t need to know what to do with your hands.
You don’t need to make your kids behave.
You don’t need to smile on command.
My job is to guide you gently, then step back and let you be who you already are. That’s when the real moments show up — the ones you didn’t know you wanted until you see them.
The photos that end up framed, printed, and passed down are rarely the ones where everything went “right.”
They’re the ones where something real happened.
A laugh you didn’t expect.
A hug that lingered.
A moment you forgot you were being photographed at all.
Those are the images that carry weight.
Those are the ones that mean something.
And they don’t need to be perfect — they just need to be yours.
