You know getting family photos is important. But you might be wondering how in the world you’re going to get your kids on board. Here are some tips from a professional family photographer on how to prepare your kids for a family photoshoot:
Involve your kids in the decision-making process by allowing them to choose their outfits or accessories, fostering their enthusiasm.
Encourage them to practice posing and smiling naturally in front of a mirror, making it a fun activity rather than a chore.
Prioritize their comfort by ensuring they are well-rested and have eaten before the session to avoid any potential mood swings.
Bring extra wipes, an an extra outfit. I like to change kids into the photoshoot outfit immediately before the session just in case they have some kind of accident on the way over.
On the day of the photoshoot, arrive early to familiarize your kids with the location and meet the photographer, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort.
During the session, maintain a positive and relaxed atmosphere, allowing your kids to express themselves freely and capturing genuine moments. Kids being silly is totally OK, It’s easy to redirect that into beautiful smiles. A kiddo who is crying is definitely hard to come back from and something we want to avoid, so please avoid threats or raising your voice.
Bring a motivating toy or snack that can be used as a bribe if needed. Keep it a secret so we can pull it out as a last resort!
Lastly, celebrate their participation and thank them for their cooperation, reinforcing their confidence and creating lasting memories of a successful family photoshoot.
