The most common mistakes parents make before family photos are almost always rooted in good intentions — but they can add unnecessary stress to an experience that doesn’t need it.
The good news is that these are easy to avoid once you know what to look out for.
Telling kids they need to behave or look nice often creates pressure before the session even begins.
Instead, keeping expectations light and neutral helps kids arrive calm instead of anxious. Treating photos like a normal part of the day works better than building them up as a big event.
Outfits matter — but comfort matters more.
When clothes are itchy, tight, or unfamiliar, kids can’t relax. And neither can parents who are constantly adjusting sleeves or shoes.
Choosing comfortable, familiar clothing almost always leads to better photos.
Expecting everything to go smoothly sets families up for frustration.
Kids will be kids. Energy will fluctuate. And that’s okay. Some of the best photos come from moments that don’t go according to plan.
Micromanaging behavior, correcting posture, or constantly redirecting kids can break connection quickly.
Trusting the process allows things to unfold more naturally — and that’s where meaning lives.
The simplest way to avoid these mistakes is to come in with one goal: be present.
Let go of expectations. Trust that your family doesn’t need to be perfect to be worth remembering. You know your kids better than anyone else. Use what you know about them to best prepare them for a photoshoot.
If you’re feeling nervous about how your session will go, you don’t have to navigate that alone. You can reach out through my contact page anytime — even if you just need reassurance.
