When families ask me about the best beaches for family photos in Northern Michigan, I always smile — because we’re lucky enough to have so many beautiful options, each with its own feel. Beaches here aren’t just scenic backdrops. They create space for movement, play, and real connection, which is why they work so well for family sessions.
Over the years, these are the beaches I come back to again and again — not just because they’re beautiful, but because they photograph well and feel good for real families.
This is, by far, my most commonly photographed beach — and for good reason.
Otsego Lake State Park Beach is incredibly accessible and close by for most of my clients, especially since I’m based in Gaylord. That proximity alone makes sessions easier, calmer, and less rushed.
What I love most about this beach is how family-friendly it feels. There’s plenty of open shoreline, gentle water, and room for kids to explore without feeling overwhelming. The light here is soft and flattering, especially in the evening, and the setting feels relaxed rather than busy. There is also some good variety options here to add some forest shots as well.
This beach is perfect for families who want:
Petoskey State Park Beach is one of my favorite spots when families want classic Lake Michigan vibes.
The dunes, tall grasses, and wide shoreline create so much visual variety in one location. It feels natural and open, but still cozy enough to encourage closeness and snuggles.
This beach works especially well for families who want photos that feel:
It’s also a great option for kids who love to explore — there’s always something to discover here.
Traverse City State Park Beach offers that iconic “Up North” feel with the convenience of easy access.
I love this location for its clean shoreline, expansive water views, and beautiful light in the evenings. It’s a great option for families who want beach photos without the need for a long walk or difficult terrain.
This beach is ideal if you’re looking for:
This stretch of shoreline is one of Northern Michigan’s quieter treasures.
Along US-131 between Petoskey and Charlevoix, there are several pull-offs and small beach access points that feel more tucked away and intimate. These spots are wonderful for families who want a beach session without crowds or distractions.
I love photographing here because it feels calm and personal — the kind of place where families naturally slow down and settle into each other.
These beaches are great for:
The best beach for your family isn’t necessarily the most famous one.
It’s the one where you can relax. Where your kids feel free. Where you don’t feel rushed or overstimulated. That’s why I always help families choose a location based on who they are, not just how the beach looks.
When everyone feels comfortable, the photos take care of themselves.
If you’re thinking about family photos at the beach and want help choosing the right spot for your crew, I’d love to help you plan something that feels easy and natural. You can reach out through my contact page anytime — even if you’re just starting to explore ideas and dates.
