How Far in Advance to Book a Family Photographer in Northern Michigan. If you’re starting to think about family photos, one of the first questions that usually comes up is timing.
How far in advance do we actually need to book?
The short answer: at least three weeks before the date you want — and closer to two or three months ahead if you’re hoping for a weekend session.
Here’s why.
Northern Michigan is beautiful, but our window for comfortable outdoor photos is limited.
We really only get about four reliably nice weather months a year — typically late spring through early fall. That means everyone is trying to schedule photos during the same stretch of time.
Families. Seniors. Couples.
And on top of that — weddings.
Many weekend dates are already spoken for well in advance because weddings take priority on Saturdays during peak season. That leaves fewer weekend openings for family sessions, which makes those dates go fast.
If you need a weekend session, booking early is especially important.
Between work schedules, school, and kids’ routines, weekends are the easiest option for most families — which also makes them the most competitive.
If a weekend date matters to you, I recommend booking two to three months in advance whenever possible. That gives you the best chance of securing the date you actually want instead of trying to make something last-minute work.
If your schedule allows for a weekday session, there’s often more wiggle room.
Weekday availability can sometimes be found closer to the date — especially if you’re flexible with timing. That said, even weekday sessions tend to fill faster during summer and fall, so earlier is still better than later.
A lot of families hesitate to book early because life feels unpredictable — especially with kids. But getting on the calendar sooner actually makes things easier, not harder.
When you book ahead:
Ideally, I love when families book around two months in advance. It gives us plenty of breathing room and takes the pressure off as the session approaches.
Honestly? No.
If you already know the season or month you’re aiming for, it’s never too early to reach out. Even if details aren’t finalized, securing your date early gives you peace of mind — and options.
Waiting until the last minute doesn’t usually give you more flexibility. It usually just limits choices.
If family photos matter to you — if this is something you don’t want to rush or settle on — timing is part of the experience.
Booking early allows the session to feel intentional instead of squeezed in. And that ease carries through everything else, from planning to the day of the session itself.
If you’re thinking about photos in the next few months, I’d encourage you to reach out sooner rather than later. Even if we’re not booking immediately, starting the conversation early almost always leads to a better experience.
